Big belly boosts risk of later dementia
I found this story on Yahoo.com and was written by Malcolm Ritter, an AP Science Writer. The article is focused on a recent study that found that excess fat in the abdominal region during your 40s can boost your risk of Alzheimer's diseease and other dimentia diseases during later years. In this article, the author explains how the study was performed in great detail, and he also lists the results in a very organized bullet point fashion. According to the results participants that have normal to excess body weight and have a large amount of fat in the abdominal region are 89% more likely to have a case of dementia than people with lower fat in their belly. The exact cause of the correlation is not quite certain, but one doctor (Jose Luchsinger) proposed that it may have something to do with extremely high insulin levels. I found this story sort of interesting because I have heard of excess fat leading to problems with the eart and blood, but i never could have imagined that it could have neurological effects as well.

Honestly, I have trouble getting too riled up about this article-- doesn't it seem like every other week, a new paper is published that comes up with a new reason why people need to lose weight? It's the same way with articles about sleep deprivation-- Dr. Maas tells us that not getting sleep will make you fat, ugly, stupid, and will adversely affect pretty much every aspect of your health. I think the shock value goes down a little bit after each new finding.
