Response: Luxury Homes Eco-Friendly?

So after reading the previous post of the fires, which I found extremely interesting, I came across an Associated Press article of the same issue. I think this is a good article to discuss about because the points of views on these 2 articles are very different. This AP article details that the luxury homes that were burnt down were actually eco-friendly, which makes us re-question the motives of the ELF, and moreover, whether it really was the ELF that headed this act of terrorism. I mean, if the homes were eco-friendly (as justified in the article), why would they burn it down? What message are they really trying to get across? From the other article, it seems feasible and justifiable that they would burn the houses down because the article did not say anything about the development being eco-friendly, but this article communicates otherwise. We can see how presentation of information can affect the way the article is interpreted.

I can understand why ELF is being implicated in this act. The acts that they perform are considered eco-terrorism, which is the use of terrorism for the sake of ecological/environmental causes. In this case, their cause is preserving land from being developed into another suburb. ELF may feel that the using "eco-friendly" is an advertising ploy because constructing on undeveloped land is probably more harmful.
I think this article is really interesting and pertains to an article I posted about Kleenexes. Both organizations (ELF and Green Peace) are using unconventional ways to get their message out. I also think that by getting media coverage these organizations are able to get more people aware of their causes.

You’re right in saying that the way information is represented affects the way an article is interpreted because the article that I read on CNN.com did not once mention that the luxury homes were eco-friendly. Had they mentioned that the homes were eco-friendly, I would have had a different stance. I would still find it weird that the eco-terrorists burned down eco-friendly homes, because isn’t the purpose of their organization to promote being green? And it does make me re-question the motives of the ELF, or whichever organization is responsible for the act of terrorism. I really like your post because it reminds me that there are different sides to each story and that before making a concrete impression or thought about something, one should investigate all sides of the story.
