According to the Washington Post, the use of anti-depressants has hit an all time high, and is increasing. After reading this article in Comm. 276, I found it very relevant to what we are studying in this class. With a vast amount of prescription options, it is difficult to determine which anti-depressant is most effective, and their effectiveness overall. After talking with my father about this issue, he noted a recent study (conducted by Robert Rosenthal, among others). The study, “Selective Publication of Antidepressant Trials and Its Influence on Apparent Efficacy,” was published in 2007 the New England Journal of Medicine. This article, and the study, examine whether or not Antidepressant companies release biased information regarding their products. It should be noted that the findings that were positive were nearly all published, whereas nearly all findings that were negative were not published.
