Anatomical Tattoos

Street Anatomy is a blog dedicated to medical illustrations in our everyday lives. The post on anatomical tattoos has some stunning photos of people's tattoos of bones, heart, and other internal organs on their skin. After perusing the blog, there are many other posts about brain depictions in Renaissance art, cell micrographs, Levi's and Puma ads, all incorporating anatomy. It really makes us think about how images of anatomy and science creep into our everyday lives without us consciously noticing it.

Oh wow! These tattoos are crazy. It is interesting that you claim these images show how science can creep into everyday life. It seems that these illustrations are actually accurate to an extent, but I wonder to what extent. Also, do the tattoo artists know that much about organs? (other than the skin) lol. This shows how easy it must be for the general public to access images of science.
Pretty cool, and a little scary (the tattoos I mean).

that's a really good connection you've pointed out about how anatomical images (i.e. science) have become art. i've seen tattoos like this before and they're certainly.... uh... interesting? "to each their own" i suppose!

Those are some fantastic images, especially the ones where the organs on tattooed just above where the actual organ is located (such as the brain tattoo). I think your perspective on this body art is an interesting one. Usually when I look at tattoos of bones and organs, I feel like people have a more macabre motivation for this modifications to their bodies. But I think you make a very good point, and the fact that a lot of those pictures have bones and other body parts in the correct locations suggest that we might have some innate appreciation for science.

These pictures definitely scream 'science images' although they were the last place I'd expect to find them. These tattoos show how science can be a form of art in some people's minds and I am impressed with the tattoo artist's ability to construct such real-life looking images. These tattoos reminded me of the "Bodies" exhibit in the city especially since we have been talking about museums lately. It is definitely an interesting way of taking part in science communication, since every person they pass can get a glimpse of what the inside of the body may look like!

OK, folks, I'll admit: my reaction is "eww, gross!"

Ummm, my reaction was definitely like professor Lewenstien's at first lol. But looking through the pictures I found myself wondering about the scientific accuracy of the tattoos. Did these people do any research on how the organ or muscles should actually look? And how much do the tattoo artist’s know about what they’re creating? these tattoos also reminded me of a less permanent science display, the sweatshirts with ribcages and hearts pictured on the front. I think they support the same idea of being connected to science and anatomy, but are a more…removable option 
