Ok, so this isn’t totally a “science” related post, however, I feel that the concept of using art to promote activism and awareness is one of the most powerful ways to get certain messages out there. Almost all of us are involved in some kind of art, whether it’s just listening to songs on our ipods, participating in theater, photography, or writing, art influences all of our lives, and can have a very powerful impact as well. In BioNB321 “state of the planet” (a class I think everyone should have the chance to take), we had a lecture where our guest speakers and main topic all concerned environmental activism through some kind of art. One of the speakers was an author working on her first novel that involved fictional friends dealing with changes in the planet, and the other guest speaker was a singer/song writer who uses his work to promote messages about global and environmental issues, as well as stories that are close to his heart. Anyway, as I was looking for examples of activism through art to share during our lecture, I came across a couple of music videos I thought some of you might be interested in. one of them has to do with science and environmental issues, and other deals with general social and global issues. I found both to be very inspiring pieces, and I also found it interesting to examine the communication these works inspire. By looking at the posts left on youtube about these videos, we can see that they’re already working to promote communication through a different medium, almost like a blog, but generally attracting a different crowd than might comment on a science or social issue blog. Finally, I encourage anyone who knows of more examples of science or social issue communication through art to share them with us! thanks J

I've always been fascinated with how science and art combine. These videos are great examples of communicating science through contemporary, maybe even unconventional mediums. I think that it's a growing trend to involve science and technology in art and expression.
Looking through the LabLit website for our last paper, I found a competition that was initiated by LabLit and SciCult. SciCult is a group that was established to help network upcoming and developing artists who are inspired by science and technology. They hope to spark discussion on the role of art and culture in the scientific world. The competition was to re-design the iconic white lab coat into something more flattering and expressive.
For a long time science been separated from culture. In the Mead and Metraux article they found that high school kids knew they couldn't live without science, but it was still foreign to them and was contained in a traditional image. I think that combing art and science is a great way to break through those images and show the public how real, important, and involved science is.
Not only is science related with art in many ways, but with communication as well. The three different topics are all related in several different ways through many different examples. Art as a source of visual communication can easily incorporate science. With the addition of science a message is conveyed using science communication. Ultimatley, communication is conveyed in many different ways including art.
